SOME INTERVIEW....
HOBS SPUTNIK INTERVEIW:
:
Mynd: Aside from a radioactive Russian we can call the white Jeru the Damaja (see/hear "Who Am I" from Sounds Of Satellites Crashing), among other things, Who are you and how did you come up with your name?
Hobs: I'm Hobs Sputnik, coming from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. The name Hobs Sputnik came from my friends. Hobs was short for
Hobo (kinda lived like one for a bit, train hopping and hitch-hiking, barely surviving living on my own) and Sputnik because I'm Russian descent, i
guess the 2 just came together and I stuck with it, later adding on The Satellite MC to build more of a title, sounded dope. haha
M: When did you start rhyming and what are some of your influences?
H: I started rhyming in 2001 I think, but before i picked up a mic, I had some friends who had a hip hop group called Deep Mischief (a group which had 2 mcs and 3 djs) and I remember going over to their house and getting to listen to the stuff they had been making and it blew me away. My homie TankWonderful was first to get into the rap game with Deep Mischief. He got the itch after dropping on a few tracks so he
decided to get some equipment for his crib that we could start doing our thing too. At first I wasn't even thinking of rapping, but I was down
to make beats and learn the computer studio stuff. Soon enough TankWonderful had me rapping on tracks.
I'd have to say that Deep Mischief and TankWonderful were my biggest influence. Seeing that my friends were capable of making Hip Hop
really made me feel like there's no limit to what we could do. I had been listening to Hip Hop since i was 6 yrs old and couldn't get enough of
it, but to see it right in front of me, being done by my close friends just had this incredible feeling that i could get closer to Hip Hop than I
already felt.
M: How would you describe your music to people?
H: I would describe it to people as underground, stresscase, fight for your rights, spaced-out, real, untouched, paint your own destiny type of
Hip Hop.
M: As far as I can tell you're a very busy person music-wise. Any estimate on how many people you've collabed with? Who were some of
your favorites?
H: Yeah I do try to keep projects going all the time, keeps me out of trouble. Umm a estimate without really looking....about 50 artists at least I'd say. As for favorites? All of them, it means a lot when I get to work with another producer or emcee. It's awesome when talent comes
together for the common goal of making some really good hip hop. I love collabs.
Here's some of the peeps I've worked with in the last few yrs: K-the-I???, Ancient Mith, Th' Mole, Demune, Eric Crusher, Eraze and Slap, Nomar
Slevik, DJ Bizkid, Lxor, ID Obelus, Nubs, TankWonderful, Dylusion, Noah23 and MadAdam, Tykus, Kain Marko, Solemn Fiend, DJ Brace, Gruf The
Druid, ShortRock, Aamir, Wormhole, Staplemouth, ATI, Avatar, Neila, Riff Raff, Ape9, Sapience, Eskimo, Debmaster, Ceschi, Cancer, Andy
Able, Seta, Kung mutha fuckin Lao, Lyvr, Utopitek, Lord Kufu, AsIs and more I'm sure of it.......
M: You've had a hand in a few groups, oddly enough I interviewed the other half of Satellite5 last time. What brought you two together?
H: Yeah I'm a part of Perfect Color Combo (Myself and TankWonderful, our new album drops soon too), Freak Techniques (Myself, Dylusion, Lyvr
and Lxor), and finally Satellite5, which was brought together via myspace. I had been networking a lot back when NWD compilation was in the
making and he was one of the many artists I had reached out too. I really like his tracks and his rhyme delivery, it was a style I hadn't heard
really, it was original to my ears and I wanted to do more tracks with him. We kept in touch through emails and PM's (since we were in 2
different provinces and hadn't met face to face...YET) and just continued to get to know each other and our music. Time went on, we did a
few tracks here and there, and then 2 yrs ago i decided to go out to London Ontario and meet this stranger that I really didn't know too much
about, but what brought us together was that we both wanted a lot of the similar things in the music we were making. We connected like we
knew each other all of our lives. I think that was the beginning of Satellite5, from then on it seemed a path had been set. I went back last yr
too to work on tracks with A5 for our upcoming album which will probably be ready for a January or February release.
M: Earlier this year you released your first solo album, Sounds Of Satellites Crashing, what made you decide to go solo?
H: Before this release I had done mostly group projects, I had also finally got my own setup to record at home, so while doing music with all
my homies I was also working on Satellites Crash album. The album took over 3yrs to make, but doing a solo joint was what I needed to do, I
wanted to put in work and feel some self accomplishment. I hope everyone likes it.
M: If you had a super power, what would it be?
H: Probably telekinesis, you wouldn't need anything else when you can make people do what you want. BUY MY ALBUMS!!
Did it work? haha
M: What projects can we look forward to in 2010?
H: In early 2010 me and Anubis5 will be dropping the SATELLITE5 album, we been working on this for over a yr and are wrapping things up as we speak. Me and TankWonderful (my homie down the street) are dropping another installment of THE PERFECT COLOR COMBINATION, I'm thinking late 2010 Me, Dylusion and Lyvr's FREAK TECHNIQUES album should be done too. I'll probably be involved with some other projects as well as a feature.
M: What're your thoughts on the talks of 2012?
H: Ah i get mixed feelings, most times i try not to get involved and just wait to see. I expect change, some expect the end of the world. I had my days of getting into the 2012 theories.
I know the world's not gonna end because i haven't fulfilled my destiny.
M: And what would that be?
H: Live a long life, being involved with the arts and hip hop, travelling, meeting people, and winning some sort of eating contest.
haha
I just wanna grow old and acquire as much knowledge as i can threw experience
M: How far can you throw experience?
H: depends on who's willing to catch it
M: World government... good or bad?
H: It's already happening in my eyes, and its been going on forever i feel.
BAD
Fuck the government.
I just hope nothing too crazy happens in my life time and hope the children of the next generations will have a decent life.
M: So is it safe to assume you're an anarchist?
H: Yeah
M: Do you feel that anarchy is the way to achieve world peace?
H: I don't think world peace can be achieved.Gotta have the good with the bad,its part of the balance.
I'm an anarchist in I choose to use my lyrics to break the laws,to express myself,to overthrow the government. They cant stop me.
M: Why did the road get crossed by the chicken?
H: It was his time, everyone has roads to cross and paths to take.
M: Ahh... good outside the box thinking
H: yeah i impressed myself with that answer
M: No doubt. Any shout outs/plugs you want to drop?
H: Thank you Mynd for taking the time to help people get to know a little bit more about me, Shouts out to all the Motherboarders, Shouts out to Dog the Bounty Hunter, and keep your eyes and ears open for the new projects coming soon, I like donuts, i hate spiders and I'm out...peace
